Tanzania Family Safaris

Family Safari Holidays in Tanzania

Tanzania is fantastic for family safari holidays! As the country is situated within Africa’s malaria belt, we don’t recommend traveling here with children under 6 years. However, it’s a great destination for wildlife-loving youngsters aged 6 years and over.

For sheer concentration of animals, Tanzania is hard to beat! Game drives are action-packed, particularly in the areas making up the country’s famous Northern Circuit. These areas are among the most affordable destinations in Africa for family safari holidays. The larger your group, the more economical the trip becomes, as the cost of using a vehicle is split among the family. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) in Tanzania’s southern region is worth considering too, and there’s the exciting option of combining your safari with a beach break on Zanzibar!

Throughout the country’s north and south, many properties are well set up for families. For example, they have family rooms or interconnecting rooms. Additionally, some have swimming pools and larger communal areas. A few companies also offer private activities for families, allowing for a flexible approach to your family safari holiday.

Additionally, Tanzania’s family-friendly accommodations and safe environments enhance the overall comfort of a family safari adventure, while memorable photo opportunities capture moments with iconic African wildlife. Village visits and tribal experiences with the Maasai, Hadzabe, Datoga and Iraqw tribes foster cultural appreciation. Sampling traditional cuisine and exploring vibrant markets provide a culinary adventure, and expert guides educate children about wildlife, conservation efforts, and environmental awareness.

We wholeheartedly urge parents to embark on global journeys with their children. By doing so, you are not only traveling the world, you are unlocking the boundless potential of their young minds to embrace diverse cultures, embark on worldwide adventures, and savor a plethora of enriching experiences. Together, you are creating memories that will forever shape, inspire and broaden their view of the world.

Best Time For Family Safari In Tanzania

The most popular time to experience a Tanzanian safari is during the dry season from June to October. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity levels are low, and the chance of rain is minimal. It is the perfect season to witness how vast numbers of prey congregate near rivers and water holes, which encourages predators to base themselves in these areas. However, it is also a busy time on the Northern Circuit. For a more intimate experience with fewer tourists and vehicles around, we recommend travelling during the low and shoulder season months.

Dry Season

June to late October & December to February Best time for wildlife sightings; book early

Tanzania experiences a long dry season from June until the end of October and a shorter dry period from January to February. Both are superb times to travel to Tanzania as all the national parks will be easily accessible. Not only are they the best time for a safari, but thanks to the dry weather these two periods are also a great time to experience a tropical beach retreat on the Zanzibar Archipelago. Since it is the most popular time to visit Tanzania, expect to see more safari vehicles in the popular parks on the Northern Circuit.

Green Season

April, May, November Ideal to see a lusciously green Tanzania and fewer other visitors

This is the season when the landscapes turn green, the sky is clear, and the light is incredible. It occurs thanks to two rainy seasons. The long rains arrive from March to May and the short rains, which are less predictable, happen in November and December. Despite the afternoon thunderstorms, it is a great time to visit Tanzania, because the northern parks remain accessible, the landscapes are incredibly beautiful and there are fewer visitors.
