Overview of the Umbwe route
The Umbwe route, though less popular, is a trail that deserves serious consideration for those looking to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Historically regarded as a challenging path, its reputation stems from the steep inclines of the first two days. However, despite its initial intensity, this route remains accessible to many hikers. Starting on the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, the Umbwe route merges with the Lemosho and Machame routes by the third day, just before reaching the famed Barranco Wall.
One of the Umbwe route’s distinctive features is its solitude; during the first two days, you’ll encounter few, if any, other trekkers, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter experience. The route is offered in both 6- and 7-day itineraries, with the latter being particularly recommended for beginners or those without prior acclimatization, allowing for a more gradual ascent. Scenically, the Umbwe route is nothing short of spectacular. It provides trekkers with some of the most breathtaking views on Kilimanjaro, as well as the opportunity to traverse all of the mountain’s diverse climatic zones. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to observe the unique flora and fauna that call Kilimanjaro home, making the Umbwe route a truly immersive and rewarding trekking experience.
