Overview of the Northern Circuit route
The Northern Circuit is the most recent addition among the seven established Kilimanjaro climbing routes. It is also the longest route on the mountain and the only one that provides views of Kilimanjaro from all four sides. Some guides promote the Northern Circuit as the easiest Kilimanjaro route due to its extended itinerary and more leisurely pace. While it’s true that this route offers excellent acclimatization with less strenuous daily hikes, those unfamiliar with long treks might find the 9-day trek more exhausting than shorter options. The Northern Circuit is distinguished by its superior acclimatization, stunning vistas, and less-traveled paths. As the least frequented Kilimanjaro route, it offers a more secluded climbing experience without the crowds.
Picture spending over a week exploring the majestic “Roof of Africa.” As you ascend, lush tropical forests transition to unique high-altitude flora such as Dendrosenecio kilimanjari. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the expansive African savannah, the southern Kenyan plains, and Kilimanjaro’s volcanic features. At night, the clear skies reveal a brilliant Milky Way sprinkled with countless stars. On summit day, you will reach Uhuru Peak and witness a spectacular sunrise, the iconic glaciers, and the alpine desert zone near the equator. For the most daring adventurers, there’s the option to spend an extra night in the Crater, joining the exclusive group of travelers who experience this unique opportunity each year.
