Overview of the Marangu route
The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola” Route, is the oldest and most established path on Kilimanjaro. It stands out by offering sleeping huts with shared dormitory-style accommodations instead of camping. The Mandara and Kibo Huts each contain 60 bunk beds, while the Horombo Hut has 120. Mattresses and pillows are provided, but you’ll still need a sleeping bag. The huts come with communal dining areas and basic washrooms: modern amenities like flushing toilets and running water at lower altitudes, and simpler facilities such as long-drop toilets and buckets of water at Kibo Hut.
Many climbers favor the Marangu Route for its reputation as the easiest path, featuring a gradual slope and straightforward ascent. However, its brief duration can make acclimatization challenging. Approaching Kilimanjaro from the southeast, it lacks the scenic diversity of other routes, as both ascent and descent follow the same path. As a result, it often becomes quite congested due to its single-track nature.
